CPCL, formerly known as Madras Refineries Limited (MRL) was formed as a joint venture in 1965 between the Government of India (GOI), Amoco and National Iranian Oil Company (NIOC). CPCL became a subsidiary of IOCL in 2001. CPCL Manali refinery is one of the most complex refineries in India with Fuel, Lube, Wax and Petrochemical feedstocks production facilities. CPCL meets the energy needs of Tamilnadu State and parts of neighbouring States.
The present capacity of the Refinery is 10.50 MMTPA. The crude refining capacity utilization of the refinery was 96.8% in 2019-20. CPCL has invested a Capex of Rs.961 Cr. on projects such as DHDT revamp, GDS unit, and RLNG for the year. The operation of 1MMTPA refinery at CBR, Nagapattinam has been stopped. A new 9 MMTPA refinery cum Petrochemical complex is planned to be set in its place after dismantling the existing facilities.
